Shetland elopements

Thinking of eloping here? Amazing, you’re onto something magical.

You, your partner, the vows.

Let’s talk about a lowkey, calm, intimate ceremony. Strip away the business of wedding planning, your ‘big day’ doesn’t need to be big.

A wedding doesn’t need a big crowd, or a fancy venue. Tesco flowers and pawn shop jewellery will serve the same purpose as a £200 bouquet and £5K ring (I actually think it has way more charm). Your wedding dress/suit can be from vinted, and you’ll still look incredible.

This is your day, and yours to experience in whichever way you choose.

So how do I do this?

Firstly, you need to decide how you want to do this.

If you’re looking for a more personalised ceremony, a celebrant might be the way to go for you.

A celebrant can help with arrangements on the Shetland side of things. This can be anything from setting up an altar before your arrival, to incorporating personalised beliefs and rituals into your ceremony.

This is a great way to make your ceremony truly your own, in all of its intimate glory.

After the ceremony with your celebrant, you can simply pop into the town hall to deal with the paperwork side of things with some small legal obligations. This is usually to confirm your identity, and the legal declarations to bind your marriage.

You’ll need to contact the registrar and give them notice of your intention to marry, and book the service. The legal minimum notice in 29 days, but its advised to give as much notice as you can to void any issues with documents.

You’ll also need two witnesses, this can be your celebrant and your photographer if you choose to have one.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for a more formal service, a registrar can legally marry you in an approved location out-with the town hall. This includes most beaches, and most areas of Shetland.
